Exhibitions

  • Summer exhibition From Columbus to Mayflower - until 26 November 2020
400 years ago, the ship the Mayflower left Leiden for America. The exhibition From Columbus to Mayflower in the Hortus botanist Leiden tells you more about the American plants that were known in our regions at that time. From corn, tomato, tobacco, pumpkin and sunflower; with the informative walking map you will discover them all. Behind the Garden House, near the Vegetable Garden, you'll see a special little greenhouse that was created by artist Annelies Dijkman. At the end of the season a fairytale-like pumpkin will grow in that same greenhouse. Definitely worth a look!

  • Small exhibition about common pavement plants
In the garden there are several tubs containing the most common pavement plants in the Netherlands.

Walking in the Hortus

  • Walking guides
Complete your visit to the Hortus with one of the walking guides, which are available free of charge at the entrance. Our summer exhibition From Columbus to Mayflower has a special walking guide, but you can also choose to take a walk along our crown jewels, flower bulbs and geophytes or the Von Siebold memorial garden. There's plenty to choose from!
