On Wednesday evenings in June, July and August, the Hortus botanicus Leiden keeps its doors open until 9 PM, allowing you to enjoy a sultry summer evening visiting the garden, the glasshouses and joining special activities, such as yoga and meditation classes, as well as lectures, tours and board games. Don’t miss out on getting to see the Victoria amazonica waterlily in bloom, one of the jewels in our crown.

Relax
Where better to escape from everyday chaos, get some exercise and find peace than in nature? During Manasvi's meditation class, you’ll learn different meditation techniques that will give you more grounding and balance. You can also join a Vinyasa Flow yoga class, bringing your body and mind in motion with standing, balancing and lying postures. Both classes take place outside, surrounded by the greenery. If you book a yoga or meditation session on June 1, July 6 or August 3, you can end the evening in an extra zen way by attending a guzheng (a Chinese harp instrument) performance by Maaike de Wijs.

Gain knowledge
If you are feeling up for a more educational evening program, then join Hortus tutors Maxime and Hanneke along a walk in the garden and learn how to do a quick sketch of a plant or your favourite flower. Test your plant knowledge at the game table or follow a guided tour on various topics following our theme this year: Plants in Focus. There are lectures to attend, such as the one by photographers Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong, who’ll talk about their project Tree and Soil. For five years, they recorded the landscape around the nuclear disaster area in Fukushima and combined the images with historical material.

There are also three temporary exhibitions in the garden this summer, organized by a group of students who are researching the sex life of plants and the relationship between humans and plants in everyday life.

Hortus Grand Café
The Hortus Grand Café is open every Wednesday evening this summer from 18:00 to 21:00 and serves a special 'dish of the day' every week.

Registration is required for certain activities, for this and for the full program you can click here.
